When they breezed through Wellington last time, Simon Burgess said, “What with anthems to whiskey, home, the sea, virgins, soldiers, waltzes and polkas – you know you are in a folk concert. But when the music with these themes  is played with panache and artistry by an eclectic group of highly competent and  professional musicians like Himmerland, you realize that times have changed.

“They were well able to present a program of folk/roots music with authenticity and excellence, fusing sheer musicality with understated passion for  their material … extending also into the domains of jazz, calypso and reggae.”

This time they are pairing up with celebrated traditional Irish singer and flute player Nuala Kennedy, for what’s sure to be an unforgettable night of international music and magic.

Daniel won the 2015 Joan Prior Young Performers Award, and is going from strength to strength. Coming from a family of musicians  (his father and uncle played finger-style acoustic guitar, and fiddler Gillian Boucher is his aunt), he hails from Greymouth and now we’re lucky enough to have him living in Wellington.  He’s doing his musical apprenticeship in the good old way, busking in the downtown area, and delighting diners at cafes like Meow and the Saigon Van Grill Bar whenever he gets the chance. We’re looking forward to another opportunity to enjoy again his sensitive music and personable stage presence.

Sue Harkness is another former mainlander who has at last gravitated to the capital. Sue has a strong melodic voice and backs herself with a great guitar style to perform her robust repertoire of New Zealand material, along with trad and contemporary folk ballads. Since moving to Wellington, Sue may have been better known as an organiser of music in her role on the Wellyfest committee – here’s a chance to see her perform on the stage. You won’t be disappointed.

Col Wright may be Australian but that hasn’t prevented him being a stalwart of the Wellington folk scene. He is appreciated not only for his singing and guitar-playing but for running the Wellington folk club and producing the Balladeer in the 1970s and 80s. He has performed in Germany, Ireland and the USA as well as his native and adopted countries, and his repertoire reflects that rich experience.
